Peabody School, Albemarle County, Va.
Peabody School needed an addition to house its lower school. The 12,000 sf addition includes classrooms, administrative, art, drama, language and break out spaces. The design works in concert with the existing adjacent context of the original school structure. While matching materials and roof forms, the new design brings light into the classrooms with bands of windows and skylights. The new structure connects to its outdoor spaces with terraced outdoor assembly space, a light filled lobby facing the playfield and includes a slate chalkboard in the wall along the sidewalk. Future phase plans include library and multipurpose space additions.
The Peabody School addition is the first LEED-NC (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, New Construction) Certified project in the Charlottesville area. The sustainable features of the design include a focus on indoor air quality, day lighting, a high percentage of recycled materials, and reduced water usage.
